Pornostagram: the Porn Social Network

Quentin Lechémia is an entrepreneur; blogger and creator of the My Band Market platform. He has just launched Pornostagram, a site that pretty much uses the principle of vintage photo filters, but bypasses Instagram’s censorship barrier. Beyond being a simple X version of Instagram, Pornostagram could become a real social network of porn. Therefore we decided to skype it’s creator.

Hey Quentin, can you explain your project to us?
Basically, Pornostagram is the Instagram of X. It’s a Social network allowing each person wishing to post naughty, erotic or pornographic pictures to do it. It’s the same principal as Instagram but without the censorship.

Why Pornostagram instead of Pornstagram?
Because Pornstagram was already book, but for sale. I made an offer to the owner but the price was insane so I chose Pornostagram.

Breasts censorship won't get!

Breasts censorship won’t get!

What audience do you target?
Anyone. Any X amateur. Content providers will be amateur exhibitionists, porn actors or actresses. But the main users will mostly be anonymous people, sort of like the Bonjour Madame website. People who will come regularly watch categories, tags or actors they enjoy watching.

What’ s your business model ?
It isn’t really defined yet, I am waiting to see what impact the website has. The ad frames are already settled, but I don’t know whether I’ll chose public company or porn ads.

The mainstream aspect isn’t an easy matter to deal with when you’re in the porn world…
I know…I built a start-up names My Band Market, managed by Advice (the public company made by Vice, which is also ours, ed) and they told me that It wasn’t easy to find advertisers for Le Tag Parfait, although it went quite smoothly until now. For Pornostagram, I’m not sure I’ll have a conventional public company but in that case, I might as well go in a sex public company.

You’ll end up in another business, a lot less profitable (a much lower CPM, affiliation…) unless you get a very important traffic. Porn isn’t Eldorado either.
Either that, or we’ll develop charged features. For instance, we might charge the “change filters” options, there are tons of small means to make profit from these photo actions (retouching, filters…), even if the main must remain completely free.

It might also constitute a buisness card, in parallel with your other projects, because the pitching is a lot simpler.
Calling it “the Instagram of X” is a true pleasure, everyone understands. Actually even when you say Pornostagram everyone gets it. But calling it a business card, might be a bit far fetched, it depends on the people you work with, because everyone isn’t opened on porn; I also consider it as an entrepreneurial action. A lot of people had the idea of creating an X Instagram, but they didn’t always have the means to do so because it must recreate every single filter, which represents countless nights of programming.

Aren’t you afraid that people might get tired of it quickly?
It’s a possibility, but it is my job to try and renew things, making interesting communication operations. One can get bored of anything, but it’s also up to them to move a little to make sure there are positive actors, and events all around the website.

Is Pornostagram fated to become an X social network?
Yes outright. I visit a lot of sex sites and they are seldom well coded. Mostly, when they are, they are charged. Navigation is rather fluid on Pornostagram, my goal was to do something a little luxurious, to magnify the porn images. I saw you posted on your twitter “post your dick with a filter > post your dick > radish”, it’s pretty much that, why not make a beautiful radish!

You integrated sharing buttons to social networks that aren’t all ok with nudity… do you want to kill our facebook accounts?
In fact it doesn’t directly share the picture, but just a link without the preview, and you always end up with a disclaimer. There shouldn’t be any worries on that aspect of the site.

Although it can be bettered, the web-app version already works quite well

I guess it’ll difficult to have a mobile version of it with Apple, but what about Androids?
Actually we can create an an Apple application, that can can download but not via the Apple Store. The goal is to make the applications more fluent than the actual version of web apps. In my mind, it was a great deal to develop a mobile version. For instance, this morning, 40 % of our traffic came from mobiles.

What do you think of the extreme tightening politic adopted by major web players on explicit content, more precisely about how Google enjoys screwing websites with their algorithm?
Mine isn’t at all intended to be well referenced, I just want Pornostagram’s name to be known. I don’t want the images to be referenced, I prefer them to be a bit protected. Since porn is less and less emphasized, some websites become references, you don’t type “porn” in Google anymore, you directly go on the tubes. Pornostagram’s purpose is that you don’t need an intermediary such as Google or Facebook to access it.

Aren’t you worried that Instagrams’and Facebooks’ lawyers might come after you?
It’s a possibility, we’ll see. But I can’t really see how they could attack me, for “-stagram” has never been their property (see Boobstagram, Sexstagram…), filters aren’t copied, everything was recoded.

But you still use “X Instagram” to communicate?
It’s an easy shortcut to make, but I try to avoid it (this interview proves the otherwise, rascal smiley, ed). Anyhow, if they attack me, it will make the website more famous.

Pornostagram isn’t officially opened, but you can access it via this VIP link, and put lovely hearts on our pictures.
